Riviera Maritime Media has published a new article exploring the growing interest in vessel-specific risk assessment and the role continuous monitoring, intelligence and earlier intervention could play in marine insurance.

The article, “Insurers consider risk-scored cover as vessel-by-vessel pricing gains traction,” features insights from Nicolas Ponet, Head of Sales at Vanguard.

It examines whether a more dynamic understanding of individual vessel risk could help shipowners, brokers and insurers make better-informed decisions, respond earlier to emerging threats and reduce the severity and cost of maritime incidents.

Rather than relying solely on broad categories such as vessel type, trade, flag and historical loss records, vessel-level risk assessment considers how a ship’s operational exposure changes over time.

This can include its location, trading environment, emerging threats, onboard activity and wider risk indicators. When combined with continuous monitoring and operational support, these insights can help organisations identify developing risks and intervene before an incident escalates.

The article also considers the evidence the market will require to demonstrate a clear financial return, including whether earlier intervention and faster casualty response can reduce claims, disruption and off-hire costs.

Nicolas said:

“The opportunity is not simply to provide shipowners and insurers with more data. It is to turn changing vessel-level risk into practical insight that supports better decisions, earlier action and improved outcomes.”

The discussion will continue at the Shipping UK Conference on 6 October 2026, where Nicolas will join industry representatives to examine the practical application, evidence and economics behind vessel-by-vessel risk assessment.
