Vanguard Tech's maritime intelligence has been referenced by Cyprus Mail following an attack on the Liberian-flagged tanker Lipsi in the Strait of Hormuz on 4 October 2026.

The vessel, managed by Dynacom Tankers Management, was reportedly struck by an unidentified projectile while transiting the strategic waterway. The impact damaged its engine room, leaving the tanker disabled and adrift.

Vanguard Tech identifies tanker involved in the incident

UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) issued Warning 150-26 following reports that a tanker had been struck by an unknown projectile. Although the initial warning did not identify the vessel, Vanguard Tech identified it as the Lipsi, a 115,000-DWT Aframax/LR2 tanker.

A separate NAVAREA IX navigational warning also identified the vessel and confirmed it was drifting approximately 3.9 nautical miles northeast of Jazirat Um Al Fayarin.

The vessel's crew were reported safe, with no environmental impact reported at the time. The origin of the projectile and responsibility for the attack had not been established.

A newly delivered tanker caught in the escalating security situation

The incident is particularly notable given the vessel's age. Lipsi had been delivered to Dynacom on 24 August 2026, just six weeks before the attack.

According to Cyprus Mail, this marks the third Dynacom-managed tanker reportedly struck in the wider Strait of Hormuz region in less than three months, following incidents involving Acheloos and Kavomaleas in July.

The attack adds to growing concerns surrounding the safety of commercial shipping through one of the world's most important maritime energy corridors.

The importance of maritime intelligence and incident monitoring

The continuing attacks across the Strait of Hormuz and Persian Gulf highlight the operational challenges facing shipowners, operators, charterers and marine insurers.

Timely vessel identification, accurate incident reporting and ongoing maritime security monitoring are essential to understanding emerging threats, assessing voyage risks and supporting operational decision-making.

Vanguard Tech continues to monitor developments across the region, providing maritime intelligence and security risk analysis to support informed decisions in an increasingly complex operating environment.
