In Q1, we noted the following trends:
• Vessels continue to be targeted in vulnerable areas below the waterline; over 31% of all seizures recorded in Q1 2024 were found in the sea chest.
• Seizures took place across eight (8) individual Brazilian ports in Q1 2024, highlighting the diversification in ports of departure.
• Containerised cargo remained the primary target in Q1 2024, accounting for 50% of all seizures.
• Paranagua port recorded the highest number of seizures in Q1 2024 (38%).
• The Brazil-West Africa route remains an increasingly popular trade lane for the export of cocaine. On 07 February, Brazilian Federal police seized 31kg of cocaine onboard a Liberia- flagged bulk carrier destined for Lagos, Nigeria.
